Type Two Community Bursary, Scholarships and Awards are a mixture of opportunities for a variety of students with different backgrounds, experiences, skills and community connections. Please read each of the descriptions below and decide which ones are most suitable for you to apply for - they are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference. View the contact information and links below (click on award name to download the PDF) and print out EACH of the applications you would like to apply for. Please note: some of the awards information may be from a previous year and sponsors are continually updating information through the year. Please see Mr. Machado for specific questions about Type Two community awards or contact the sponsor directly.
Please read carefully where to submit the applications, and to the different deadlines for some community sponsors. NOTE: Some of the individual completed applications need to be sent DIRECTLY to the community sponsor by the process indicated and may have a unique deadline. MANY of the individual applications are collected by the school and submitted to Mrs. Lorie Buss in the main office. If applications have different deadlines or are to be sent somewhere other than the school, it will be indicated below. Unless otherwise indicated, all applications go to Lorie Buss in the office. When submitting applications to the office, please clearly indicate award name so it can be filed accordingly. ASSOCIATION OF BC LAND SURVEYORS, KOOTENAY GROUP CRITERIA: For a student entering a full time geomatics program at a Canadian college, technical institute or university. Note: Send your application directly to sponsor - application deadline August 31, 2017.
AVALANCHE SKILLS TRAINING BURSARY CRITERIA: For students who are interested in gaining skills in avalanche awareness and who may be planning to get into outdoor education, guiding or be safe recreationalists in our backcountry. Students need adequate ski or snowboard skills that are regular pre-requisites for AST 1 & AST 2 or level 1 professional avalanche course. Training needs to be done within the next ski season. HISTORY: Established by Mark Dumont, outdoor enthusiast.
BEV LAPOINTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN TRADES Applicants must be registered as a full time or part time female student in the trades, be a permanent resident of the region that Kootenay Career Development Society serves (Nelson, Castlegar, Salmo, north shore to Kaslo and the Slocan Valley as far north as the Village of Slocan. Open to any individual who self-identifies as a woman. Deadline for submission is May 31, 2017.
CAITLYND PIDERMAN BURSARY HISTORY: Caitlynd was a 2006 LVR graduate who loved Basketball. CRITERIA: Student is trying to overcome health challenges, or student must be an athlete that shows superior determination, effort & commitment to sport.
CUPE LOCAL 748 CRITERIA: Son or daughter of a member of CUPE 748. C+ average during final year. Attendance and punctuality, school participation and community involvement are considered. HISTORY: Established in 1995 for deserving students who are sons or daughters of CUPE local 748 members and who are graduating from a high school within School District #8. EMBARK 'GAP YEAR' AWARD CRITERIA: For students who are planning to living in a foreign country (excluding the USA) for 6 to 12 months after graduation for travel, study to volunteer or work. ERNIE GARE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: Outstanding athletic achievement throughout high school, maintain high academic and leadership qualities in school and community. Number of awards to be determined. HISTORY: In memory of Ernie Gare, a sports enthusiast and coach who was very active in the Nelson community. Students are asked to use extra pages in their application and not be limited to the space provided in the application. FRASER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: To worthy students who plan to continue their post-secondary education to include college, university, trade, vocational or artistic training and private music lessons. HISTORY: Established in 1991 by Jim Fraser, a teacher at Nelson High School in the name of his wife Margaret and himself.
GUILFORD BRETT MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: Must be involved in Music. HISTORY: Established in memory of Amy Ferguson and the United Church Boys Choir. Deadline is May 31, 2017. Applications sent directly to the address on application form.
JAMES HAMILTON ALLEN SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: Male student; priority to student entering Ministry of the United Church or other protestant denomination. JOHN CARTER & BILL BING MEMORIAL BURSARY CRITERIA: Proceeding with post-secondary education in the fields of natural history, environmental studies or parks management. HISTORY: Carter and Bing were two avid outdoorsmen with respect for and appreciation of the wilderness. In 1996, both men gave their lives in the pursuit of safety for others. John by an avalanche while patrolling ski runs and Bill by a plane crash while searching for a downed plane. KOOTENAY COOP COUNTRY STORE SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: This Scholarship is open to an active Co-op member, or the child of an active Co-op member. Preference will be given, but not limited to applicants who are pursuing studies in the following areas: food, agriculture, cooperatives, community development, environmental studies, or alternative health. KOOTENAY DISTRICT COUNCIL BURSARY (CUPE) CRITERIA: Awarded to graduating son or daughter of a K.D.C. affiliated member. KOOTENAY DISTRICT COUNCIL WOMEN’S COMMITTEE (CUPE) CRITERIA: Awarded to the son or daughter of a K.D.C affiliated member. Requires an Essay on “The Union’s Involvement in Women’s Issues”. Note: send completed application directly to CUPE - email@example.com
KOOTENAY SAVINGS COMMUNITY CHAMP BURSARY (NEW!) CRITERIA: Open to Grade 12 students who have shown exceptional leadership and demonstrated commitment to their community. Please click on title above for more details. Note directions to send application directly to sponsor. KYLE LEVY - PRIDE IN LOGGING BURSARY An annual bursary of $1,500 to a student entering the field of logging or a full time forestry or trade* program at a Canadian college, technical institute or university. *Trades program defined as a British Columbia school offering heavy duty mechanics, professional truck driving, heavy duty machine operators course, welding course or similar training program that leads to employment within the logging industry. NEIL MUTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The family of Neil Muth and Columbia Basin Trust are pleased to announce a new scholarship for people who have triumphed over adversity and want to pursue post-secondary education. Deadline is April 20, 2017.
NELSON AND DISTRICT CREDIT UNION AWARDS (3 awards): 1. INSURANCE COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD CRITERIA: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. For students that show demonstrated involvement in community, school, regional, provincial, national and international activities. 2. ASPIRE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD CRITERIA: preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. Student has obtained academic excellence in all study areas. 3. STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD CRITERIA: preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. For students that have demonstrated strong leadership abilities recognized by peers and teachers.
NELSON REGIONAL SPORTS COUNCIL CRITERIA: For students who have been involved in either school or community sports. Deadline for submission: April 6/17 - submit to L.V. Rogers office. One recipient chosen from all School District 8 applications.

RHC INSURANCE BROKERS SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: Available to one male and one female student planning to attend any type of post secondary institution within two years of graduation. Good school record in a variety of subjects as well as evidence of leadership and service, also involvement in the arts and community service.
ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION CRITERIA: Students furthering their education at Selkirk College. Preference given to relative of Legion member. Evidence of working to potential. Evidence of financial need is required.
TED HARGREAVES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: Preference given to a female hockey player of the Kootenay Wild and/or have acted in some capacity in forwarding the female hockey movement (e.g. coach, referee, etc). WEST KOOTENAY TOY RUN CRITERIA: A student who is in true financial need that would not be able to continue on to post-secondary without the help of the scholarship. Requires a hand written history explaining financial hardships, family circumstance, and your future educational goals. Please note: Letter must be turned into main office by Friday, April 21, 2017.
ZACK HARVEY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD (West Kootenay Educational Resource Society - The Whole School) CRITERIA: Must have attended the Vallican Whole School. Deadline is Sunday, April 30, 2017.
