Today is Orange Shirt Day. Thank you for wearing an Orange Shirt today. Wearing an Orange Shirt today shows a sign of honour and respect for Indigenous children who went through the Residential School system in Canada. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School commemoration event. It grew out of Phyllis Webstad's story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at St. Joseph. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to attend residential schools. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies and discussion for the coming school year at LVR. Visit the Orange Shirt Day display on the walls outside the Aboriginal Education room. And now here is a short video on Phyllis's story.
